DISPERBYK®-2009: Wetting and dispersing additive for matting agents in high and full solid systems

DISPERBYK®-2009 is another additive that has been manufactured on the basis of controlled polymerization technology, or CPT for short. The flexibility and virtually unlimited possibilities of the process, which was already in use at BYK in 1999, have led to the development of this new additive with its exceptional properties.

High and full solid systems (e.g. UV-curing systems) are especially difficult to matt due to their high solid content and, associated with this, their low shrinkage, and so they represent an extremely complex challenge for coating development. The silica-based matting agents normally used can greatly increase the viscosity of the coating, at times noticeably affecting its processability and surface properties. Milling pastes cannot be filled to a sufficiently high level, thereby setting limits to the matting process.

DISPERBYK®-2009 has been specially developed to meet these requirements. Even low doses are enough to improve the matting effect and, parallel to this, cause significant lowering of the viscosity.

Unlike conventional wetting and dispersing additives, DISPERBYK®-2009 produces a Newtonian flow that has a positive effect on coating application with a roller coater. The CPT-based block copolymer causes a good orientation of the matting agent in the coating film and also positively affects the leveling of it. DISPERBYK®-2009 allows highly concentrated, flowable matting agent pastes to be produced. The product prevents the matting agent from settling.

 

DISPERBYK®-2009 is suitable for all types of matting agents due to its polar and neutral pigment affinic groups and is broadly compatible with a variety of binder systems.

DISPERBYK®-2009 is especially recommended for wood and furniture coatings, industrial coatings and printing inks. Beside the good results with matting agents, This additive is also suitable for dispersing and stabilizing not only organic and inorganic colored pigments but also extenders.
