The matting of high-solids and UV coatings essentially depends on the perfect incorporation and dispersion of preferably high levels of silica-based matting agents. However, the use of these high levels of silica-based matting agents produces high viscosities, which in turn create production and application issues. On the other hand, the more perfect the orientation of matting agents in finished coating films, the higher the matting efficiency.
To solve this problem, BYK tailored a new additive based on CPT (Controlled Polymerization Technology) - DISPERBYK®-2008. Its pigment-affinic groups have been designed in such a way that they work equally well on surface-treated silicas and on untreated silicas. Special binder-compatible groups provide compatibility with many different polymers and monomers, and a special modification achieves excellent stabilization of both the finely dispersed silica particles and the inorganic fillers in the coating. The result is a powerful matting effect - so strong that it can even be achieved with standard matting agents and at low dosage levels. In addition, the significant reduction in viscosity provides easier processing properties for matt coatings made with DISPERBYK®-2008.
About BYK Additives & Instruments:
BYK Additives & Instruments is one of the world’s leading suppliers in the additives and instruments sector. Approximately 85% of our sales are generated by foreign countries. Our major export markets are Europe, the United States and the Far East.
Additives are used by processing industries in the production of coatings, inks, plastics and papers. In very small quantities, BYK additives simplify manufacturing processes, and significantly improve the quality of finished goods, such as motor vehicles and furniture.
BYK Instruments can quantify the quality of color and gloss and the physical properties of paint, plastic and paper products.
Instruments from BYK are predominantly used for quality control.
BYK Additives & Instruments is a member of ALTANA, Wesel. ALTANA develops and produces high-quality, innovative products in the sector of specialty chemicals.
BYK Additives & Instruments employs around 1,200 people worldwide, 25% of whom work in research and development departments or technical laboratories.
