New solution to old problems:
BYK-Chemie extends its product portfolio with innovative adhesion promoters
BYK-Chemie is the market leader for additives for the paint and plastics sector. Constant research and development ensure that the company is always one step ahead where solutions to customers’ technical problems are concerned. Its market and technological leadership with wetting and dispersing additives or surface additives and the resulting core competence form the basis for its ability to develop new innovative products.
Adhesion promoters of all kinds have been a familiar product on the market for decades. The transfer of BYK-Chemie’s existing know-how to new additive groups has led to the development of two, new, innovative adhesion promoters: BYK®-4500 and BYK®-4510.
New VOC guidelines present the formulator with new challenges. The technology shift from solvent- to water-borne systems continues apace. Overcoating an old, solvent-borne coating with an aqueous paint is general practice today. Frequently, this results in poor wet and dry adhesion.
BYK®-4500 offers a new solution in this respect. It improves the adhesion of water-borne coatings even on rough-ground substrates due to its strong pigment affinic groups (see figure 1). The effect is based on a new process for which the patent is pending.

Strong pigment affinic groups improve the adhesion of the
new coating to the old coating
BYK®-4510 is an adhesion promoter for one-coat stoving systems for industrial coatings. The effect of the additive is based on a high affinity with the metal substrate and with the binder in the coating (see figure 2). BYK®-4510 therefore improves the adhesion on untreated, galvanized and hot-dip galvanized steel, as well as on aluminum and other metals.
