Doers and Providers of Impetus

But boy was I able to! At ALTANA, my abilities as a doer and a provider of impetus complement one another perfectly. While some tasks have to be made easy, in other areas it is important to provide impetus to, say, discover an innovation of the future.

With my job I want to actively make an impact and not tread in place. Only progress and constant further development together with ALTANA, both in private and professional life, make me happy. As a provider of impetus, I like think differently sometimes and suggest different paths. Not all paths lead to success, but only in this way can we develop new products. At ALTANA, for instance, we have the opportunity to experiment with raw materials in the hope that at some point we can perhaps use our creativity to a develop a new innovation. In our company, we attach a great deal of importance to creative work methods. That impresses me!

Progress can only lead to lasting success if it rests on strong foundations. At ALTANA, this basis is created by our identity, our value system, and our competencies. I’ve already taken a few steps forward during my career and have learned many things I didn’t learn during my studies. ALTANA enables you to think outside the box. It offers special job development programs (for example, where you learn how to conduct negotiations, talk with employees, or learn about the interface between your own view and the view of others). Many training programs teach you which tools to use in day-to-day work. It’s a great opportunity, enabling you to exchange thoughts and ideas with participants from completely different fields and companies. You learn a great deal.

Each individual has an inner hurdle that he or she has to overcome in order to deviate from accustomed paths. Overcoming it is an art, becoming aware of it, keeping it as low as possible. The “we’ve-always-done-things-that-way” attitude can be a big obstacle to the team. We need a lot of patience and the right arguments to surmount it. Then we get new food for thought.

I found it interesting that all of ALTANA’s divisions focus on the upper midmarket segment. Previously, I worked for a very big conglomerate where it was very difficult to make your own decisions because many people were involved in the decisions. I personally found this very restricting. In research, I want my projects to be placed on the market. When they are rejected in talks, this is very frustrating in the long run. An advantage of ALTANA is that the decision-making paths are very short; you work very close to the market, and look for cooperation partners from the market.  You have a look at what the market needs and work very closely with customers. In the end, this cooperation leads to greater success. Daily cooperation is very enriching because everyone adds new aspects and we all complement one another. You also have to be open to it because sometimes the subject matter is much different from what you are used to and you have to weasel your way through. Diversity is very important and enables us to benefit immensely from one another.

With my projects, I can decide myself which strategy to use and can freely allocate my own working hours making use of various flextime models.
